Spot lights?

Post by tommin »

My spotlights will not work? Vehicle was already wired so just connected via the cables but no joy. I checked all cables from switch to light and even replaced all connectors, still no joy?

They are wired to come on with high beam, and the layout goes like this, One live feed (red) from van headlights to switch, one feed (yellow) from switch to relay, and another feed from relay to spot lights. I hear the relay tripping when I put lights to high beam but still no joy with the spots? Any help appreciated.

Although I'm no expert like some on here it sounds as if you haven't got a fused 12volt feed to the relay (terminal 30) therefore no actual power getting to the lights. See this link to the Wiki which, although for fog lights, shows the principle: http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/475/relaytl3.jpg

Chandeliers might be better.
Actually lamp is the terminology for the whole fitting that contains the light source. So you would put a lamp in a lamp.

Pete thanks for the response, this relay was fitted prior to my purchasing the van and seems to be in use for the lights etc. What I can see of it, there is a live coming from somewhere within the ignition pod? as well has from the front lights? Is it a possibility that too many connections are using it, almost every terminal has two connectors coming out of it. It's a small relay also? Half the size of the one I use in my quad (ATV)? I will recheck the relay and see what else is connected to it. Maybe better to rip it all out and start afresh, looks like too many half brained hands have worked this over the years, too many short cuts that are creating issues down the line.

I have found this approach to be favourite in the past. At least you then know that the work has been done to a standard that you're happy with. It also means that any faulty components are eliminated - in this case it wont cost a fortune either.

I have to agree, over the years many enthusiastic people may well have modified the electrics. The best and simplest bet, in my opinion anyway, is to take it all out and do it properly yourself.

Good luck with it all and have a read up on the relay mod for getting more power to the bulbs and protecting your wiring. Its all in the wiki

What a long strange trip it's been

Sound advice and will take it, when you do it yourself and to spec then all should be good. Updates to follow, thanks!

Yeah like i first stated, checked renewed and checked again all cables and connectors. Don't worry this is one of those challenging things that crops up every now and again, and will be resolved. I'm one of those chaps that won't let it sit, I need to find out the what, where and why, and to correct it........

Well it's a pretty simple circuit...this one is pretty close (you don't necessarily need the overide switch though)
