Watercooled gearboxes on an Aircooled

Post by dugcati »

Apart from a possible bell housing transplant and making sure an early box is used so the linkages line up plus the assumption that the van and box both use hydraulic clutch action......

How compatible in terms of ratio/drivabililty are early watercooled boxes on a 2.0l Aircooled lump and is/are there any other things to watch out for?

ratio wise you'll find something that does the job fine, but I don't know if physically the box fits or whether the mount does, but there is no equivilant wbx version of DK, ABB is closest but has 0.85 top instead of .82 in the DK

iirc, the dk box is slightly longer than the wbx ones, you should be able to make it fit, you can certainly fit a Aircooled box to a wbx, seen it done.

the gerabox sits in a slightly different position so you will need to mod the front mount to suit it.

you can use the wbx gearbox mount but you will find the driveshafts are different lengths and your engine mount bar may need moving
