I got sick of bidding on mirror mounts to replace my knacked alloy ones....so I made some
Made of steel and welded, polished and painted. Cost me about £20 for both sides, most of which was the stainless bolts etc.

I really like what you have done. I also really like that colour, green synco's rock.
I would perhaps just make the top mount slimmer than the door frame, but anyhow that is a really neat and simple solution. Could bend up that steel tube quite easily.
One of ours has a broken glass, and the mount onto the arm is not quite right, so it won't adjust well - I've been thinking of just getting a pair of generic HGV heads, something like http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/260695006790" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The mirrors are available from vw and I also have heard that GSF sells them. Last one that I bought was about 18 quid.you get the choice of heated as well.

Mirrors should protrude no more than 200mm beyond the vehicle width each side. unless the lower edge is more than 2.4m high, now that would be a flippin high syncro!!
