Cylinder head removal

ive looked at the archive and wiki but cant find any answers there so here goes.
I have two sheared head bolts in my watercooled 1.9 (off side head). Ive removed the engine and its to one side. However I simply cannot remove the head! All the other head bolts are removed (one sheared off while removing, the other was already broken) and any other ancilliary pipework connected to the head. Ive tried levering it off and it just wont budge!! I've been following the Haynes manual guide but am I missing something? is this common problem? How have others managed to remove their heads? (I am close to removing my own head with a bloody hatchet with this problem!)

how many nuts have you removed? should be 8

yep all 8 are removed. its parted slightly at the bottom where the pipes are (fraction of an inch) but not at all at the top. Ive had a crow bar in between the water pipe manifold and the block, put all my weight behind it and nothing.

try a rubber mallet. the barrels a prob stuck to the head, keep trying but best avoid the crowbar method. once the head is off you can look foward to removing the pistons

The way I've been feeling about this head problem, thrashing it with a rubber mallet has been a satisfying experience Ive managed to seperate it about 2cms but one liner is coming out with the head and still very tight. So another day of thrashing ahead. Then of course its a matter of removing the sheared in studs!!! Anyone know where I might get new studs at a reasonable cost?

Ok head is off finally.

Dont know why i bothered cos there's no way i can get at the sheared off ends of the bolts. Any one got an engine to sell???

Hmmm sutton bridge a bit more than a pop around - 2 hours drive I think. What you got and how much?
