HELP..New Brighter Bulbs Needed for Headlights on 1986

Post by kokohutt »

Hi all,
Can anyone help me with what bulbs we need to brighten up the ones we have already. there are so many code and im up the wall with it all. i would like to upgrade to xenon bulbs where possible and l.e.d ones for the remainder.
If anyone can put me straight on some codes then i can google them to get the best price, at the moment it is ebay, unless you know of anywhere else that doesnt cost an arm and a leg as i would like to replace them all but you can see there are a few, or some links would be great...its just sending me doolally looking at all the different ones!
here's what i need:
2 white Xenon front dipping/main beam:
(now, i think its H4 for these but some on ebay say they wont fit early t25, so mine is a round/single headlight, 1986, 1.9 petrol, watercooled. i dont know what the original bulb shape looks like?) And the bulbs below will be L.E.D bulbs i think and thats what my problem is! i am aware that some of the same coded bulbs are used for different places on the van but if you would be soooooo kind and help fill in the code gaps, colours and quantities needed, you would make a woman, very close to the edge, happy again!!
2 x yellow Front indicators:
2 x yellow Rear indicators:
2 x ?Colour? Front side lamps:
2 x ?Colour? Rear side lamps:
1 x white Reversing light:
? x red Rear Stop:
? x red Rear Tail:
? x red Rear Brake:

Fit relays and get full voltage to your bulbs

https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/VW ... headlights

Do your headlights say H4 on the lense? Early headlights, not necessarily all round headlight, were not H4 bulbs but round 410 bulbs however I think there is an upgrade bulb for these types called a hb12 bulb. Either way H4 lenses give a better light spread iirc

If your lenses say H4 on them you need some H4 (code 472) silverstars or phillips extreme bulbs

LED's I cannot help you with as I just use standard bulbs

The majority of the bulbs: brake lights, indicators, reverse light, fog light will all use a single pole 21watt LED equivelant like this one:

Don't use LEDS to replace your H4 Halogen headlamp bulbs (at 1986 yours should be a H4) fit a Osram NightBreaker plus or Philips Exstream which are 90% brighter.(check to see you have the letters H4 stamped in the glass)

Long term you should be thinking about fitting relays to the headlamps to minimize volt drop. This is a recognised mod that will ensure full voltage reaches the bulbs. VW's old wiring and non relay switching results in significant volt drop and poor headlamp performance.

That leaves the front and rear side lights....the rears are normally a single pole 10watt bulb (which I can't find an equivelent for) and the front side lights, a bayonnet 4watt that appear to match these:

Hope this helps.
