Gearbox - what to do?
Hi folks,
wondered if anyone could offer any advice...
my gearbox is done for, stuck in 3rd and it's not the linkage - spoke to Aiden who could rebuild it but not 'til about May
I can get a recon box from VW Heitage and get it fitted but it'll cost about £1,200 (although I'll get £200 back for the old box).
Has anyone got any cheaper ideas - if I could get a used box that someone could guarentee was OK that would be good - but where from? Tried Megabug but they haven't got one.
I know there are a load of different boxes - my van's a 4 speed 1.9 water cooled.
Cheers

£500 for a second hand 4 speed box...... sounds steep to me, £250 - £350 is more like it. I'm sure if you post a wanted add someone will have a spare kicking about. £500 is AAP 5 speed price!

I suppose you pay the extra premium for some sort of guarentee - get one for £250 from a show or Ebay and it's a bit a gamble as to whether you're going to be taking it out again when you find it doesn't work, or after a month, or a year etc. That would be the appeal of a recon one from VW Heritage or similar. Of course getting one from a trustworthy 80-90er would be much better than one from someone you don't know about

Re: Gearbox - what to do?
I have sold two boxes recently. A four speed couldn't find the code off a DG for £225 and ad DK box for £265!! I offered both buyers a weeks warranty. Both buyers very happy.
Try Simon- Spannerboy or Kev Letshaveabus both are decent blokes.

Re: Gearbox - what to do?
Like I say....I would be very suprised if there wasn't someone on here with one for sale and......if they are not willing to give you a similar weeks warranty (so you can fit it to make sure it's OK) then you just don't buy it.
Most of the traders on here will be aware of the circumstances that they aquired a gearbox, it's provenance. Obviously that's not a gaurantee but if it'sa sold as a quiet box without issues then for the most part that is exactly what you'll get.
Just ask the question, say you don't want rubbish or something that has a completely unknown back ground. A weeks warranty will give you enough road test time and peace of mind. More than that you are into one of Aidan's excellent builds but with a wait time.
