Brake Disc / pads and Bearing replacement.
!989 1.9 petrol, I have looked in wiki but not found the answer.
In short I intend replacing the brake Discs / Pads, Bearings and speedo cable on my van and I wonder if there is anything in particular I should look out for, and how long I should allow.
If there is an article in the wiki then can somebody point me to it please.

Everything on your van should be 'Late' system, brake pads and discs are ok from GSF but I'd reccommend you get these wheel bearings from http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... gory_id=80 They aren't the cheap type and should last. If you're not mechanically minded have them fitted by someone who knows what they are doing.

Thanks Ian, another quick question (I reckon I know the answer) when I replace or even remove hubs on my mini`s I always replace the front hub nut with a new one I guess the same goes on my van.

Good advice....Simon at Brickwerks has recently started selling a cheaper bearing version, still quality (Febi) at £8.00 a side less.

Thanks Martin, now all I have t do is get the parts ordered, and find the time to crack on with it

I fitted a set of new fronts into the new discs on the kitchen floor one evening (on a piece of board) and it took about 20 minutes per side using a medium flat faced hammer and a 20mm brass rod to tap the outer (fixed) race of each bearing in, gently does it, take your time.
Before you start if you study the inside of the hubs you'll see there are channels that access the rear of the outer races for if you ever need to replace the bearings but keep the discs ... hence the 20mm brass bar

I did the same.
Stick the new bearings in the freezer overnight and put the discs in the over to warm.
The bearings go in a little easier.

A few things to remember fitting new bearings:
The difficult part is starting off the race in the disc, once you have it 'going' work around the race knocking it in evenly. You will hear the tone change once it hits the stop in the recess..a distinct 'ring' as the race comes to a stop.
Pack the bearings with multipurpose high melting point grease (LM) (drag the grease into the bearing with two fingers, wide side) until it ouses through to the other side.
Pack the voids between the bearings but not too much as the grease expands and could fling out when hot.
These are taper roller bearings so do not 'load' them, as in (tighten the nut with a wrench) correct adjustment is by hand, until the nut touches the washer and back off slightly, adjustment can be checked by grabbing the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock, there should be a slight amount of play (a couple of millimeters) to allow for expansion when hot.
Peen the nuts into the recesses on the stub axle to secure nuts.

Now doe`s anybody know anything about the quality of BRT Bearingshttp://www.brt-bearings.com/1024x768/index.html my local motor factor can supply these at what appears to be a good price depending on quality.

As BRT are a supplier and don't make the bearings themselves, it all depends on what brand he intends to supply.
If you can find out that, we may be able to comment.
And
Remember Brickwerks supply a bearing KIT...so inner seal and nut will be on top of BRT's price and they won't supply these, you will need to go to GSF or Euro Car Parts.
