Rotational rubbing noise hard to identify

Post by waltraud »

Dear all,

just the other day i noticed a low volume but noticeable noise that starts up pretty much s soon as the van is rolling, its fairly dull like asomething is running/grinding slightly. It increased with engine speed but in relation to the wheels turning i.e. it does not increase speed when i change down which tells me its unlikely to be gearbox noise.
Have had recent new bearings and disks on the front and have checked that these have normal play. If i open drivers side (n/S) window there is no increase and it does not sound like n/s bearing.

Underneath the rear there is no laternal play in the cv joints if i jack up each wheel, all rubber boots are ok on cv joints.
Just in case a CV was 'dry' and knowcking a bit i put in a bit of spray grease under the boot to see if it would shut the noise as a temporary measure- this did not work (I know the spray grease is very thin.)

The rear wheels have some in an out movement if you pull them towars you but no 12 and 6o clock or 3 and 9 o clock- not sure what else could make this sort of noise?

NB there is a bit of rubbing from the brakes but nothing to note. Is there any way to isolate different bits and what are the definitive checks. Thanks a lot, going on trip soon and I don't ant to chuck money buying new CV's and rear bearings if I've not really understood how to diagnose them! cheers, Tim

Also, just thought that its also had new brake pads/fitting kit about 500 or less miles ago but not sure this would explain much- i did wonder if signs that i'd needed to replace front bearings might suggest that rears could go at similar time?

I had this and it turned out to be a leaking brake cylinder.

Hate to state the obvious, but have you jacked each corner up and rotated the wheels by hand ?

This might show summat up, esp if a brake is binding (or a stone / twig is stuck behind the hub = that happens)

We had a similar noise and it was play in the rear wheel bearing.

Have jacked it up and ye there is some noise which i suspect is badly adjusted rear brakes- shoes are about 2yrs old but drums are old and i think ridged so going to take off drums, check rear set up (has new cylinders) and fit new drums. I agree its the sort of thing that could be all sorts of things. T

I have this at the moment - my rear wheel had excessive play - so I tightened it and it went all grindy..
New wheel bearing needed for me , maybe you too
