Thought I had a Diesel... Water Pipes fit now?

Hello,

I have a 1983 T25 that has had a mk1 Gti engine replaced some time ago in its life. I know very little about the Van to be honest. I assumed it was previously a diesel (can't remember why, I think someone commented on the gear box) but having looked at the sticker by the drivers door and a quick Google it seems its a DG engine originally, so a 1.9 water cooled petrol???





Now my water pipes are rotten and need replacing so I bought a pair of plastic ones from eBay for a good price. They appear to be identical: Part No: 251121399G.



Now worried these will not fit in my van? Is there anything I can do to get these to fit?

They will fit drop your fuel tank& replace .Diesel& petrol coolent pipes have diffrences in pipe lengths where they go into the engine bay & internal bore size.But its possible to interchange ensure your engine hoses will fit to the pipes.

Ah good news thanks camper,

So will this effect me in any negative way? Both the pipes I have bought seem to be the same but in guides etc it states one is different from the other?

The only difference is once it has come into the engine bay? and the rest is the same shape and length as the original ones?

Will I need reducers etc for these? or will my existing hoses slip on?

if it was a dg originally then the reason the derv bit might have been mentioned is to fit a gti engine lots of derv bits are used like bell housing engine mounts etc, so you might find the pipes will fit

Ah ok i get you.

Sorry to sound dumb but I am not entirely clear on the differences between diesel and petrol water pipes.

The ones I bought are definitely diesel.

The pipes in the van are old metal ones. I remember someone on here mentioning there the old type, and I know my calipers etc are older type also.

I thought the diesel water pipes are a foot shorter? Would this not cause me problems?

Also which end is shorter on diesel pipes? Front or rear?

Busy day today.

Dropped Fuel Tank
Removed Fuel Pump and Accumulator (Mk1 Golf Engine Fitted)
Removed rusty water pipes
New Plastic Pipes in Place (wont fit through bulkhead)

What a pig getting the old pipes out was. Even with the tank dropped one had to be chopped with angle grinder, then other came out from rear as one. Whilst doing this I nipped one of my heater hoses:



I am not sure if this will leak. Any way to fix this or is it a replacement job?

The new larger plastic pipes seem to fit OK despite them being from a Diesel and my Van being what I now know was a Petrol DG engine. The hoses at the engine end should fit over the larger plastic pipes (did a quick test before fitting with the pump to cold water pipe. I tried measuring the hoses but due to being well used it was difficult. The part number for a hose that seemed to fit is: 025 121 103 C, can anyone tell me the inner diameter as I looked all over Google and no luck.

If the front hoses from the radiator do not fit as I suspect they are original and too small would I need to buy 2 reducers 38mm - 32mm and use some of my old pipes?

I am also having a nightmare getting the plastic pipes into the hole in the bulkhead. Is it meant to contain the 2 heater hoses also??? I really do not think it is going to fit all 4 without damaging / restricting the heater hoses.




So to summarise:

• Can I fix the damaged heater hose?
  Do the heater hoses go in the same small bulkhead hole as the pipes?
  If so can I reroute them in anyway?

Where the plastic pipes go through the bulk head as shown in your pict are normally cradled by a steel wire arrangement.Regarding the angle grinder damage to the heater hose i suggest you cut and join together with jubilee clips metal tube insert .Others on hear may disagree and suggest other methods get a few opinions before doing any think.The diffrences in the length of the plasic diesel pipes i was told is the engine bay end so check that your radiator hose will still fit.
