Knocking noise and battery light

Post by martinstout »

Hi everyone,

Have tried going through the forums and Wiki but that has just confused me more. We have had a strange knocking sound coming from what seems like towards the back right hand under - side of our left hand drive van. It usually starts as speed builds and gets worse (louder) the faster we go. Initially, I thought it was only there when the clutch was out but it is more constant now. When it first started we took it in to the local mechanic who could not find anything - especially as the noise had stopped when he tested the van. It disappeared for a couple of months and now it is back - seeming louder this time around. My wife also said when it started this time there was an intermittent flicking of the battery light on uphills or acceleration. I have had it out a few times since and although there is knocking could not get the battery light to flash. My thoughts are this is CV joint related but the more I read I become less convinced. We have booked it in for tomorrow but I would like to try and focus the mechanic in on what is likely to be the problem to save time. We have already missed one weekend away because of this! -typical.

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks for your help,

Martin

My guess would be either CV joint or wheel bearing. But to be fair that's why you're paying a mechanic, his job is to tell you what's wrong

I'm thinking the alt light is unrelated - you say you'e only had the van out a couple of times, so it could simply be doing it's job & telling you that the attery drain is getting a bit much - give it a charge ?
What a long strange trip it's been

Once I was camping in South Wales and we were awoke in the night by a humongous bang that made the whole van vibrate. I looked outside for the offending 4am football match going on but there was nothing.

500 miles later, after camping in the Peak District we were on our way home when we had a loud knocking from the rear like what you describe so we stopped and got a tow home.

When the van was home and the weather was more pleasant I had a look under the van at the rear when something at the front caught my eye. The loud bang we heard must have been the front passenger side spring snapping.

Changed the front springs and the noise never repeated. At first I assumed it was the CV joints so I had them done too just in case.

A front spring snapping in the night with a humongous bang = what on earth were you doing
