Reversing flood light - what to buy and where to fit?

Post by syncropatrick »

Too many times I've reversed into things when off the road in the dark - trees, tents, cows, small children, garages.... Its getting expensive to repair corners, end caps, wrangle bumpers back into a semblance of straightness and pay for a good solicitor.

I'm after a super bright flood light with a wide angle, to mount near the top on the rear.
I've seen
  • dinky LED ones, but these look a bit dim.
LED running lights ala Audi, but these appear to be narrow angle.
    Incandescent ones.
    HID ones.
I'm inclined to wire it up to a switch so it's not automatic when reversing as I don't want to blind other road users.

Any recommendations chaps?

Hi Patrick.

I fitted this Britax number from an agricultural fitters to my old Syncro. It has two 55w halogen bulbs to give a wider spread than the singles.

I bolted it through the bumper, ran the wires in alongside the tow bar mounts along the chassis rail into the engine bay. I spliced into the reverse light switch cable and had a three-way switch on the dash for off, on & on when reverse is engaged. Very handy bit of kit... :ok

Spurred on by reversing into yet another immovable object I finally got around to fitting on the bumper the first of the Hella 55W flood lamps I bought more than a year ago. After cursing crimp spade connections which kept pulling apart I got it lit. Another one going to be mounted on the roof as well.

Reversing cameras...it's the way forwards (er...backwards?) and have night vision! Cheap off ebay and worth every penny when coupling to a trailer.

I have had one of these fitted for a few years now.:

Small, robust and good light. Takes a normal 12v halogen bulb.
