How about this ...

Wild camping Windermere
by tomcourtney » 12 Feb 2011, 15:40
Just got back from a midweek 2 nighter at Bowness on Lake Windermere, wild camped almost on the lake shore 100m from the centre of town (Glebe Rd).
Parking is free, outside Easter to October, on this quiet one way street with views to die for. Also the Lakeside bar (20m stagger) does a tasty midweek carvery and pudding for £4.99 so we left the stew in the pot and treated ourselves.
All in all one of the best wild camping spots we've found, shhhh! keep it to yourselves.

Just off the road to grasmere after you have passed rydal water there are two car parks at white moss, one on each side of the road. Just next to the 2nd one on the right is a sloped lane. Go up this and at the top of the slope on the left are two small free car parks in what looks like the remains of an old small quarry. There are even public toilets back down the hill and accross the road for the morning if you need

From there you can walk back down the hill and walk round rydal or grasmere lakes or walk up Loughrigg fell. Turn left up the lane brings you to Dove cottage and Grasmere village
