Yes, sometimes all that glisters is not gold.Red Westie wrote:Well......the reason I'm asking is the obvious really.
If there need to be 12 LEDS to give off the same light output as say..a 10 watt bulb..then are these 'multi' led bulds really that power frugal?....interesting...I'm definately going to get the ameter out and check.

Re: Courtesy light upgrade
OK....one last question please, regarding the LED dash lights...
I've just been out and checked the radio illumination, it's blue so blue LEDS in the clocks would match BUT what about the heater and fan control illumination, obviously not the same bulb type so what LED equivelent (in blue) is available.
Fingers crossed someone has the answer...thanx very muchly.

Re: Courtesy light upgrade
So I've got 48 leds in total, replacing 2 x 8watt tubes. If my maths is right the tubes would draw 666ma each, so 1.3 amp total.
I've just put me fluke meter in line with the leds and total current is 165ma.
Hope this helps

Re: Courtesy light upgrade
we fitted some of these prior to last years spanish summer trip mainly so the map could be read easier
green/red and yellow roads became seperate and and easier to see on the background.
only comment is if you dont have very clean connections on the bulbs/ light switches/door switches due to the lower ampage than normal bulbs they can be temermental.
i also have the strips in my strip lights but have kept the tubes so i can switch( actually in the main lamp its remote control colour changing for moods)
also have the strips for position lamps on the outside of the van, but have found some of the really cheap ones dont last outside, they become brittle within a month or two , yet the expensive ones seem to last a year or two more.

The heater illumination is a 286 bulb.Red Westie wrote: what about the heater and fan control illumination, obviously not the same bulb type so what LED equivelent (in blue) is available
These could work.

He has made two posts; none of which make any sense at all but both of which are lighting related. He has a lighting related link in his signature (although it doesn't take you to a lighting website that I can see). Spam gone wrong?

I'm not sure, but I think this may be a "forum bot" that someone has installed. The words used seem to be picked from previous posts and strung together a bit like this:
http://alicebot.blogspot.com/
old idea, but now being used on forums. If you click on "Chat with ALICE" on the left you'll see what I mean - it's AIs early attempt to beat the Turing test. Now being used all over the place.
If I'm wrong then obviously I apologise!

I do not see why the blue LEDs would not work for you? The only reason that they may not is the color of the panel that you are trying to back light?
When I replaced my LEDs in the instrament panel I put a blue LED for the indicators' and as you can see it's blue and no longer white. The one thing that didn't show through very well was/is the clock. It's much thicker material and the red LED that I installed there had a hard time showing itself.

Super Bright LEDs is the place that I purchased mine from.

Re: Courtesy light upgrade
If you've been patient enough to read this far and are still not convinced about LED replacement bulbs for your dash then all I can say is DO IT! they are fantastic. I went with the BLUE SPARK ones and they look just like they do in the picture above.
And answering my own question about dimming LED's...YES THEY DO! dim that is...which I was suprised about but they definately dim to about half power.
These are the ones I sent for: 2pcs BAX B8.3D...thats a pound a piece (£1.99 for two) and cheaper than the standard tungsten bulbs (@ 1.20 each)
I went for the blue but you have a choice of clear white, red, and green. Delivered in just over a week from Hong Kong (pretty impressive)
If you order some you will need 3 bulbs so order 2 lots so you'll have one spare, state the type as B8.3D as he offers 3 types in the add
I've left all my switches standard, looks fine.

Re: Courtesy light upgrade
Can you get these LED's, but in a similar hue to the bulb it replaces? (looking to replace the strip light in the back) Personally i think the white light is a bit harsh
cheers, Lloyd

Not really as you are comparing to different light types 'floresent/LED'
White LEDS tend to be a blue/white compared to the more subtle hues of green (Yes green cast from floresent tubes) although it's hard to see.
It's all to do will colour temperature (bulbs are often stamped with a colour value compared to daylight which is 5600 kelvin)
As far as the harshness goes....I would be tempted to make a second difuser inside the lamp to soften the light (spread and difuse it) or use a matte white reflector (double side some white card) instead of shiney mirror chrome (again to reduce it's harshness)

look for 'warm white' led's as opposed to white, or cool white. search ebay for those words. dont know if you'll find dash bulbs in warm white led though? ive got cabin lights in warm white, and they look many times better than 'cold white' led's (in my opinion), while being brighter and less power hungry.
i kinda like the retro bulb glow colour in the dashboard as well
