Re: Brake hose set replacement
Arrggghhh Help needed i have put the hose back on and whilst doing so the manifold end side when tightening a jubilee clip the metal short pipe which it fits on has simply come out of the manifold What the blithering heck?
How do i re-fit and ensure this is air tight ... cos this is certainly the likelly culprit we have been looking for (i think)
What you think Kev??? is this the air leak

Re: Brake hose set replacement
Time to give up me thinks .. scrap yard here i come!!
After refitting pipe into manifold with Chemical Metal, GSF recommendation, also chcking for air leaks around elbow and realising that there was a slight leak as the jubilee clips dont seem to bite down enough to create a seal (all sizes and types used) only when tightening around the knuckle (edge) part of the protruding pipe does it give a decent bite!
This done and still stalls and at times sounds really low almost ready to die - then really high like some Farmer Joe's tractor Grrr

Re: Brake hose set replacement
If this is of any help....I think you have more than one problem.
I would be very concerned about that pipe on the manifold and be looking for a good used replacement (yes I know it's a pain but it just needs to be done)
In my experience vacuum pipes generally seal pretty easily, they definately don't require the kind of force you describe.
Using jubilee clips that are over large is not helping (as in the picture) as the fastening shape (internal) is too larger radius. Find a jubilee clip that when fully open just fits over the hose.
I really do hope you get this sorted.

Re: Brake hose set replacement
Hi all and thanks for the messages and sticking it out with me... this time i really do believe that the problem is sorted.....
Ok so it was a Air leak (Thx Kev) but in a very difficult place to contemplate happening .. the metal pipe from manifold, this sealedwith Chemical Metal really helpedand quietened her down.
This however is not where it ends... the accelerator cable was sticking because the bracket with the eyelet that the rod coming off the pedal was bent ....so this sorted, guess what still no good... although very quiet!!!!
Awaited a NEW ignition amplifier £19.98 from GSF Ebay shop for some reason alot cheaper than their website, didnt make a difference Grrr
Finally i re set the mixture as i thought that it must be running weak, however this time confident that i have resolved the air leaks ...
This does appear to have done the trick as all day i have not had a single stall even when reving her nuts off and allowing the revs dramatically fall
Its been a interesting sometimes emotional journey

Re: Brake hose set replacement
Im BACK..... not by choice i add its still stalling
Just not sure wat to look at next tbh
Thinking of HT leads as the spark plug attachments (metal ends which reveal threads) need to be removed in order for the leads to push on, as this was how the originals came off
any thoughts and suggestions welcomed

Re: Brake hose set replacement
sounds like your having the same problem as me,
try pressing the gas with ur engine off and see if you have any fuel coming out of the "basic idle mixture screw" on either carb
mine has suddenly started stalling when i stop and running abit lumpy and i have just discovered that my basic idle mixture screw has dissapeared out of my right side carb

Re: Brake hose set replacement
Iv read your dilema, which certainly appears to be the same.
Il have a look at mixture screw but im sure it was in there as iv been adjusting it so that i can manually reset it (Haynes Carb manual)
Thing is if even it is missing... i believe my intermittent stalling will be to another additional cause as if it is gone then i must have loosened it in my attempts to rectify the stalling in the first place
Im gona check leads as theres something not right with the way that they have to go on to make them fit, also water in petrol tank il look at aswell.
Where from then on is anyones guess
Hope you get yours sorted ... wish i could help but the fact of the matter is is that it could be down to a multitude of reasons!

Re: Brake hose set replacement
Hi, I've just had a look back through your posts about the idle problems and noticed a photo:-

Is this your engine bay? If it is it looks like a lot of it is covered in blue over-spray from a paint job? I wonder if the paint could have blocked your fuel & air filters and found it's way into the carb or petrol tank? If you haven't already done it I'd try draining the tank and putting in a gallon of fresh petrol, and for the sake of a few quid change the petrol & air filters again.

Re: Brake hose set replacement
Hi Billy thanks for reply,
The van has had a re-spray, prior to me buying it!
I have changed filters and cleaned carb with carb cleaner when i had it off the van some time ago, il have to drain the petrol tank i think as you have suggested. However i am wondering if its more water that is leaking into tank more than spray paint particles, the reason i say this is that when its cold and damp outside i have noticed that the van blows out alot of white smoke!
Lastnight for example i was at footy taking one of the kids and the van was stalling a hell of alot to the point that even to get her running (get her to idle when stationary as opposed to just when depressing the clutch on approach to junctions) in the car park was a job and a half.
Iv just got to figure how to best go about draining the tank, i had a quick look earlier and cannot see a drainage screw as such, theres the filler pipe then expansion pipe which i can only see one end not the other in respects of where it connects to tank, then the inlet and outlet pipes for the feeds to carb.
Thanks again for suggestion

Re: Brake hose set replacement
Water is heavier than petrol (remember from school science?)
so water will be at the bottom of the tank
why not take off the outlet pipe and drain it that way?
Use a jam jar too see whether there is any.... if there is it won't be a lot.

Re: Brake hose set replacement
Arrgh Science ... fond memories i certainly do remember Kev,
Il have a go tomorrow, the only reason why i asked about draining the tank was because i was contemplating changing the fuel lines at the same time, Just thought whilst i was at it etc
Just out of curiousity if there is water which is causing this? would it not also effect the running when driving down the road?

Re: Brake hose set replacement
Water is not a replacement for petrol so it would affect the whole range.
