Which battery
Hi guys
Have decided to change my battery before the start of camping season, this is the started battery not the leisure battery that was new 2 years ago, the starter battery thats in the van says it is a diesel battery???? even though my vans a 1.9dg engine, everytime i leave the van for a couple of weeks the battery loses its charge and needs charging overnight, pretty sure the leisure battery is fine as the van hasnt been used for quite some time and all the internals lights etc work fine.
My question is what is the best battery to buy make , size etc to just fit in as standard and not have to worry, i saw a bosch one on halfords for about £100 that said it gave 45% more power than a standard and i think had a 4 year warranty but does anyone know of any good deals going at the moment anywhere ??
cheers

Re: Which battery
Hello,
I went for a Bosch one last week, the S4 range. 4 year guarantee and also have high CCA (Cold start) ratings.
My van is a 1988 1.6 TD, and I went for the S4007/100 which fits in the battery holder easily.
Best price I found was here:
http://www.caraccessoriesandparts.co.uk ... -72ah.html
Halfords were about £110 I think for the same battery.
Hope this helps

Re: Which battery
A Code 096 battery will just fit in the battery box.

Re: Which battery
Don't buy from Halfords, you could save loads online on the same battery. Check your measurements though.

Re: Which battery
If you are set on a Bosch battery you should find someone with a Costco card and head down there. We have 2 Bosch silver batteries under our front seats, they were about £62 each from Costco with a free 5 year warranty.

Re: Which battery
Most online battery suppliers quote a less powerful 60ah 570CCA battery for the petrol engined Transporters but to be honest I would still opt for the more powerful Diesel battery 72ah 680CCA (096 code) as the price difference is negligable and the extra power could be a life saver at some point.

Re: Which battery
well i got the battery as per recs and now ive received it whilst it is the right size to fit in the space provided it is too high for the flap to go down ???? is that a problem i.e when the drivers seat is slided back its over the battery and the flap is up - i presume this is safe and nothing to worry about although it doesnt look quite so neat and tidy ??

Re: Which battery
Not if you have standard seats, the seat base is metal and can short out the positive terminal unless you insulate it and check it regulary for chaffing through.
Like Kev said an 096 battry would have been ideal.

Re: Which battery
It can be a problem with some battery suppliers they supply a battery with a continental code as an 096 which is to high. 096 is the British Battery Manufacturers (BBMS)code for the battery dimensions which should be no more than 175mm high for an 096.
The equivalent Bosch Battery would be a 6E

Re: Which battery
I just picked up a Yuasa Professional 70ah with 650 CCA amps (part no. 100) from my very helpful local motor factor (Mill Autos). I went in to ask for an 096 but had also picked up about the different height measurements and this one was 200mm high and would have stopped the battery cover from fitting back on. The guy very helpfully went through alternatives until he came up with this one. Its 175mm high so fits a treat. I have a slightly lazy starter but as its a syncro I've been putting off swapping it until the weather gets better. This battery seems to be the biz and spins it over nicely once past the dead spot. Cost £68.59 including the dreaded and has 3 yr guarantee.

Hello
I'm also looking for a new battery for my 1988 TD, and just wanted to check with you the specs. The one you got is 278x175x175 isn't it? is the length fine? it's just that the one Just Kampers sell for the T25 is only 242 long and I don't want to make a mistake. Also, just to clarify this is the battery in with the engine isn't it? I was just a bit confused by other mentions on this thread of batteries under the seat - isn't that the leisure battery?
Many thanks

Diesels (like yours) have the starter battery in the engine bay. Petrols (like mine) have starter battery under right front seat - which is why height is so important. Leisure battery on both sits under left front seat. Hope this helps .
