oil pressure switch problems continue...

Post by edoh »

originally - my oil warning light started coming on - intermittently - BUT - only at very low revs - stopping at lights - and roundabouts. Otherwise - fine. Would blink at start up - and then go off - until - the first set of lights/roundabout - when it would come on again (no buzzer of doom sounds).

So -

the switch methinks. Order this one from brickwerks -
http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ure+switch

as i have been told - just go by the colour of the one you take off.

well the one i took off - has most definitely got a black plastic seal to it - its only identifying feature is a number - 50950 - doesnt indicate bar pressures on it -

Image

talso - my wiring out of the switch - is not blue or yellow - BUT - green!
Image

i'm assuming i've got the right place for the switch - and this is likely to be the right switch for the oil warning light coming on at low revs - and no buzzer of doom sounds?
Image

having brought a 24mm deep socket - i took the old switch off and put the new one on - cleaned up the wiring going to the switch -and turned the ignition on -

i now get - no blinking oil light at all when i turn the ignition on - just comes on once - and then goes off completely - and as soon as the engine is started - it just blinks all the time!?!

any ideas people?

have i got the right replacement switch? would you know what the bar range should be on it?
any pointers as to where the wire goes from the switch so i can follow it up and along?

as usual all replies/opinions/comments - much appreciated -

whatever happened to the mythical saturday nights? - eh!

sorted!
talk about overlooking the bleeding obvious!
switch change did nothing useful - replaced original switch - and noticed the connector onto the switch (on a concrete drive - in the rain) was loose - thought - oh well - tried the switch - checked how the wiring ran - might as well squeeze the connecter with a pair of pliers while i'm down here - instant result! back to the blinking self test n oil light goes out completely when engine running.
the wise heads on the forum who say - ALWAYS try the most obvious simple things first -
well -
they're right!

Well....you have me thoroughly confused

my oil light doesn't blink as a self test....that is the water level test.....blinks for a few seconds on start up.

Oil light, on dash next to battery...comes on with ignition and straight off when engine runs. No Blinking. None. At all.

Does your oil light really blink??

Hiya em

honestly it does! - then it goes off once engine starts -
maybe its making eyes at me!
more likely oil pump about to blow - and desperately trying to warn me!
something electrical methinks - sometimes just comes on and goes off -
when engine started - sometimes just blinks then goes off - sometimes -
just comes on for a few seconds and dissappears again - without engine started -
a whole stage show in front of me -
seems to be running well though -
nice to hear from you -

just re read the wiki -
and your right -
should just come on solid - stay solid - and go out when engine switched on -
thanks for the reminder to check -
will have to recheck the wiring coming out the oil sender and see if its worn at any point -
regards -

Dash board warning lights:
==== Oil light: ==== (Red LED on the right of center of the dash console on late models (post 85)It will come on solid with the ignition key in the first position, and should go out once your engine starts. If it comes on dimly occasionally whilst driving, the sensor may be faulty it does not necessarily mean you have low oil pressure. Check the oil level and maybe get your oil pressure checked. On late models (post '85)there is also a buzzer in the dash which may go off if the oil system thinks there is low oil pesssure. If you continue to drive and oil pressure IS low you will damage your engine.
