Re: chokes needed
Hi
I had same problem with my chokes (same carbs).
It seems the chokes are obsolete........I waited ages to try to find second hand ones to no avail.
I recently recieved two pdsit carbs (inluding the chokes) from a fleabay seller in the usa.
He accepted a reasonable offer and After postage and getting hit with import tax, I payed £125 for the pair which were in excellent condition.
I'm sure he has the chokes you need separately too because that's what I was going to buy originaly.....
after some thought I bought the entire carbs with the view to quietly rebuild in my own time...... as I know mine are cacked.
He has loads of Aircooled stuff listed.

Re: chokes needed
you just either tape up the 12volt connections to the chokes or remake that part of the wiring harness with 2 less connections, undo the 3 screws on side of choke element retaining ring and wind them round clockwise to the butterflies are open all the time, then tighten up the 3 screws so they stay in this position , no problem starting if your carbs are set up correctly, its just like running a pair of 40 mm dellorto drla or webber idf carbs as they have no chokes

Re: chokes needed
sorry but i have to disagree. the no problem starting with no choke is simply not true.
the chokes are there for a reason. if vw didnt need them they wouldnt be there. to simply disable them is a bodge
the choke richens the mixture at start up, if yours starts ok with no chokes your running too rich.
while its true dellortos have no chokes they can still be be a pain to start they all need 3 or 4 pumps of the gas pedal to get them to fire and even then you need to have some heat in the manifolds before they run nice.
i speak from experience of both these carbs with both sets been on a rolling road to calibrate correctly.
for you chaps needing the 12v chokes if you cant find new chokes have you spoken to steve at www.gasure.co.uk as he rebuilds these carbs or just buy some second hand carbs and take the chokes from those.you see loads for peanuts at the shows. tbh its rare for the 12v element to fail, have you actually checked you have 12v going to them before condeming them?
