broken coolant distributor, upper right, outside of engine bay

Post by Epiphone »

Hi guys

Had another water pipe burst today!last one was do to not enough anti-freeze (https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=62487)

but today, what looks like the plastic water junction connection has ripped off, as the end of it is still in the end of the hose. This is junction that takes the coolant out of the engine bay through a junction and then to the heater.

Is this the part? http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=118? for a 1989 2.1i SS petrol?

looks like the whole water junction to the heater exchanger should be replaced.

as a cautious T3 driver, im always looking for signs of mischief. The temperatur went slight above middle, as I was driving through the city then when I got onto the motorway, it levelled out again slightly. But if there is no water, then it should read 0? is it due to residual water then that it didnt?

I came off the motorway and stopped at a junction then I noticed some steam, but not that much. Then I drove alittle further and saw it again, but then stopped to see what was wrong. Saw there was no water and stopped the engine. The engine was pretty hot at this point. But was still running well?? Shouldnt I get a the buzzer of doom with hot oil? or shouldnt something have alarmed?

luckily this happened just around the corner from a garage,so I pushed it there and will go and see them tomorrow morning

Thanks

This is the one that's bolted to the engine bay but from the front side. Apparently there are several part numbers shown ... maybe for types with rear heaters or automatic transmission coolers ?

yeah looks like the following, so think mine is the last one then

(from classic parts.de)
Verteilerstück Wasserkreislauf bis 9/86
Best.-Nr: 251121438
T-Piece water circulation, -9/86

Verteilerstück Wasserkreislauf Automatik bis 9/86
Best.-Nr: 251121438A
T-Piece water circulation, automatic, -9/86

Verteilerstück Wasserkreislauf ab 9/86
Best.-Nr: 251121438B
T-Piece water circulation, 9/86-

then this one is totally different shape, and doesnt have the long thin piece. Is this an extra piece and not the same as the top 3 then?

can someone post the water circulation system diagram, for the 2.1i WBX, (please)?

sorry, "please"!

I see this one, but would like to know where the hoses then go

ha nevermind, should look in my own thread

http://busdepot2.webappcabaret.net/details/water21.jsp

The connector which has broken on mine seems to be either the number 8 going to the rear heater. But I dont have the rear heater? Or is it number 4 then to transmission?

It look to me like hose 8 goes to the rear heater, and then from there to the front heater matrix, but if you don't have a rear heater then pipe 4 goes straight to the front heater matrix

I could be wrong though

OK, that makes sense, thanks. The heater was working all the time too, remember getting too hot and I turned the heater down, or was that from the engine

Im just wondering how long it was leaking, hopefully not while I was going full tilt down the motoroway but only when I pulled away from the junction, which jilted the engine, then it snapped. This coincides with the steam cloud I saw.

Last time this happened it was in the engine bay and therefore the steam cloud was massive. But this time due to connection outside the engine bay breaking, I didnt see much.

So got the bus back just now. Drove it for 1hr approx. For the first 35 mins, it was really klattering on the ventils, never hears it so loud before, but it was stood for 10 days in the cold without being started once. But afterwards it subsided.

Engine seemed to respond, OK. But it did get quite warm, the temperature sensor was over the light, but it didnt get any hotter, and seems to stabilise. Im sure it did drop down a little too, once I was getting some air into the radiator. I think it needs some more bleeding, as stopped a couple of time and unscrewed the bleed screw on the radiator and it did bubble a little.

any comments?

Here is the broken piece, as your can see, it obviously broke/cracked before, and they put some sealant on it, until it broke totally.

Ooooh... That always annoys me - the lengths some people go to to bodge... It doesn't _fix_ anything, merely delay the inevitable a bit.

now im getting the typical coolant/overheating problems. The garage who did the repairs, mentioned that they had the front jacked up etc and put 8 litre of Coolant in and then the rest with water.

But now the temperature gauge goes to 3/4 but the fan doesnt go on. Before the temperature sensor stablised at 1/2 and the fan would come on when just over.

The heater matrix, becomes hot very fast, but the radiator doesnt seem to be getting that hot.

The bleed screw on the radiator doesnt bubble, but the water coming out is cold, even when the pipes near the engine are hot.

I can run the engine when cold with the headertank cap off and no bubbling

A new thermostat was installed in November.

Does the fan only come on when temperature in the radiator is hot?
