EGR valve blanking

Post by tattoojohnny »

As I've mentioned before in my previous post, my engine is very smokey (its a 1.6 TD JX). Waiting for BW to deliver my replacement air filter but after reading a few websites they mention that blanking the EGR valve might help to reduce the smoke. Anybody done this themselves? Blanking plate is only 4 squid off fleabay so maybe worth a punt?
Any further advice appreciated
John

Hello John,

from your previous post you I seem to remember black smoke and an oil leak from the supply to the turbo. Did you get any further with this?

I have used an EGR delete plate for mine, but it's generally to prevent the gooey build-up in the intake manifold and it helps a bit with "cleaner" pick-up from lower revs, since it increases the boost a little bit. My EGR valve is controlled by the ECU, but I'm not sure how yours is actuated.

In my opinion you won't decrease you smoke level with an EGR blank-off plate - it's more likely to be caused by faulty timing, injectors or possibly a manifold air leak - easy to check the tube from the compressor to the manifold and check for leaks...

Thanks for the reply Ewen
Oil leak looks like its from the turbo oil return line so not too much of an issue to replace at some point as to the smoke I've had a better look at whats been going on.
The new air filter arrived today so decided to remove the housing to inspect the air hoses etc and this is what I discovered.

1. The air filter looked relatively new and was free from oil however it was a unipart filter so replaced it with the mann filter I got off of BW.
2. The hose from the air intake to the dump valve has at some point split. Somebody has bodged a repair by inserting a smaller hose inside the dump valve hose, this is leaking fumes as the inner hose is smaller than the internal diameter of the dump valve hose so looks like I need a new dump valve hose.
3 The crankcase breather hose has collapsed on a bend and is missing the jubilee clip where it connects to the intake hose but no obvious leak.
4 A small amount of oil leaking from the exhaust where it meets the silencer but nothing coming out the end pipe.
5 The smoke seems to dissipate when I rev the engine but soon comes back at idle. When I open the throttle again there is a puff of black smoke and a puff of white/grey smoke then it disappears while the revs are up. Also it seems like there is a short delay from opening the throttle before the engine picks up

The mechanic has just come back to work and I'm taking it in tomorrow and he's going to have a look at the turbo and see if its ok. I'll post his findings
Thanks again
John
