Westy underslung tank

Post by chuckle-bus-tom »

Hi all, apologies for the inane question here:

I have chance to purchase a Westfalia underslung gastank to allow me to free up some cupboard space in my Reimo camper, however it is missing the gauge. I will of course be using a professional installer to plumb it in, but my main question is do I need the gauge on there for operation, or can I plug the gap up? (ok, two questions!)

Thanks
Tom

Is it just the gauge missing or the whole thing?

Just read that again. No you don't need the gauge as long as it is just the gauge missing. Not sure about filling as you are only supposed to fill 80%. Not sure if it cuts off automatically at 80%. I think you may have to run the tank dry before filling so you can calculate how much you are putting in.

Filled the tank on ours for the first time on Friday. The pump stopped at 17 litres. The gauge stayed at 0%... TBH, I can't quite picture how you could read the gauge whilst pressing the button on the pump anyway.

The gauge is magneticly operated and not physically linked to the brass bevel/float arrangement (simply held with 2 screws externally and senses the position of the mechanism by using magnetic attraction)
It doesn't matter that the gauge is missing as long as the mechanism is still there blocking the hole.
The tank does have a automatic 80% cut off point.
Typically, the reason that the gauge stops working is: the aluminium float attached to the end of the bevel gear/rod assembly is full of LPG so doesn't float. This is because liquid has seeped pass the threads and into the body of the float.
Rectified by removing the mechanism, taking off the float and re-sealing with gas grade PTFE tape (evacuating the LPG from the tank can be a pain)

Thanks all!

All I'm told is that "the gauge is missing" and I'll "need to fill the hole", which could suggest the mechanism has been removed entirely.

I'll buy it and hope it's ok, but it's sensible money to still makenit back as a spares or repair!

As for the missing mechanism, I should think it would be reasonably easy to fabricate a blanking plate and gasket, welding a plate over the hole is another option but you may be wise to leave the option of refitting a fuel level mechanism at some later date.

There is a protective bash plate available to cover these for Westy Syncro models.

Not sure if its OEM or aftermarket but I see them occasionally on Ebay.de
