Hi there all, im desperate for some help please.
I noticed last night that suddendly there was a strange noise started coming from my vehicle 1.9 tdi whenever i accellerated. sounded almost like an automatic gearbox revving if you know what i mean.
Anyway as it was still drivable and as i had to be somewhere, I drove it about 6 miles and parked it it for a couple of hours.
then afterwards drove it back home with the same noise going on.
however i did notice on the way back that when i put my foot down on a slip lane to join a dual carriageway there was a shed load of smoke coming from the back end, so much so that I couldn't see behind me at all. but when i let off the gas a bit it went.
Also at one point shortly after that I held the pedal steady and could hear changes in the sound for 30 secs or so. almost like it was and intermittant fault occuring. then i thought could it be the ECU?
feels like i've lost power too as doesn't feel normal.
Ive just been outside and started it up again for a couple of minutes, looks okay under the bonnet, but have just noticed that what looks like oil is dripping quickly from the exhaust pipe where the Cat is
could anyone diagnose this problem for me please.
would much appreciate your help here guys please.

It sounds like you are describing 'Turbo' failure.....lack of power/noise/oil leaking and smoke especially when under power, these all point to bearing failure within the turbo itself.

Hello,
I agree with Martin that it might well be turbo failure, especially if the oil seal has failed and is causing a leak to the turbine side.
The other thing that will cause the noise and the black smoke is if one of your intercooler pipes has been blown off - if you don't have an intercooler, then it could just be the pipe from the turbo to the inlet manifold. If any of these pipes blow off and the pressure lowers to the inlet manifold, then the diesel won't all be burnt. At higher speeds and loads the ECU will go into "limp mode" which will reduce power and reduce the smoke. It will probably be oily in those pipes too from crankcase ventilation, so maybe that's where the oil is coming from.. also turbo seal can leak a bit of oil into the compressor side.
First thing I'd do is check those pipes to the intercooler, and if you have VAG-com check for a 00575 error code, which will indicate that the problem is intake pressure related. Let us know what is says if you get a chance to read the codes.
Good luck with it
