2.0 Gearbox code location

Post by j4jon »

I have recently aquired what I have been told is a gearbox from a CU engined van. I'm guessing that it is an early box as the shift mechanism is right at the nose as opposed to halfway down the casing. The problem is I don't know where to go looking for the identification code. I looked in the wiki which shows the code but I can't work out which bit of the box I'm supposed to look at. I found other pictures but they all seem to be later water cooled boxes which have the much bigger reverse light switch.

Can anybody help?

revers light switch is interchangeable so no difference , except the connection for the wires!

its in the same placeon the aircooleds as the water cooled.

what your looking for is a flat arear about 1/2 inch by 2 inches. its on the lower edge on the box at 45 degrees where the side meets the bottom on a later box its diagonally opposite the gear selector so similar on yours but slightly nearer the engine than your gear selector.

they can corrode and become unreadable.
main thing you need to check is the casing is different on the 2.0 box as opposed to the 1.6 box

look at the casting 'ribs' on the top of the 2.0 are deep almost like cooling fins poss 25mm, on the 1.6 they are shallow , maybe 5mm

this is a 1.6 box

this is a 2.0 box
