Cooling system set up.
Hi all
Does anyone have any info on flushing out cooling system ( VW Westy 1.6 diesel watercooled 1983) , i.e where is drain plug situated.
Also likely places for leaks ( mine has slowish leak at rear , somewhere below engine area )
many thankyou's

Re: Cooling system set up.
There's a guide for this in the Wiki. https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Co ... ing_system
I used Simon Brickwerks method because I don't have a suitable jack or axle stands and can't raise the front.

Re: Cooling system set up.
Yep , leak is coming from where water pump joins engine , probably the gasket.
Is it difficult to remove waterpump , its connected to two belts , one can be tensioned , the other i'm not sure?
Any tips?
Also is it safe to drive without the under engine cover (shaped alloy plate thing ) for a few days?
cheers

Re: Cooling system set up.
Funny plate thing can go in the skip dont need it and I prefer to have access to all my bits.
Wiki ^^^ is your friend but to give you an idea....................
Top belt is adjustable for alternator, remove this, bottom belt is from crank to waterpump, adjustment is by removing the 3 bolts on the end of waterpump and removing a shim or 2 or 3!! this effectivly increases the diameter of the pulley, when refitting make sure you retain the shims and fit on the outside of the pulley to act as washers (you dont then loose them) and on some the screws are a 'tad' long and if the shims arent all in place then said screws can catch on w.pump.
Any how remove hoses from waterpump, if I recall you will need to remove alternator to get access to some of the bolts (disconnect battery earth so alt live dont give grief
Have a good look at the t'stat housing as over time the plastic fatigues and you get leaks here, you will also find the waterpump shaft will be very free/loose whatever and often a leak comes from here, thats terminal eventually..
If you go for a new pump then gsf do 2, one is a cheapo bit of rubbish the other £26ish is I believe vag and hence very good,
while your at it I would replace the t'stat cocer and the stat, here I would buy from the yard as they are good quality. you only want to do this once,
use the link ref;bleeding, dont jack the front up its nonsense and not needed.
