Caddy / T25 Alternator Wiring ? - with pics

Post by Dubtruck »

Ello!

I have been having problems with my battery running flat and warning light coming on.

I recently have had a caddy 1.6 diesel put into my T25 and have been suffering with charging problems since, mainly because I think I have wired up the connections wrong! (the pins / plug is not the same set up on the two alternators, the image below is of the caddy alternator).

The Alternator has several pins:
A higher spade / pin marked W+
A lower spade / pin marked D+
A large bolt marked B+
A small Bolt marked B+

Today, I have done a thorough examination and my results are as follows:

First I discovered I had two positive cables (a thick and a thin) both which ran direct to the positive terminal!
I also have a thin negative cable, which I had incorrectly attached to the W+ (and I also had tried the D+)...I should have got the meter out first!

....................................Engine Off...........Engine On...........Engine Off
.................................Connectors Off......Connectors On .....Connectors On (Connectors refers to Large Red to Large Bolt, Neg to Small Bolt)
Positive Bat to Negative Bat.....12.33...............12.19.................12.25
Positive Bat to Engine Block.....12.33...............12.19.................12.25
Negative Bat to Engine Block....0.....................0......................0
Positive Bat to Big Bolt...........0.....................0......................0
Negative Bat to Big Bolt..........12.33................12.19................12.26
Positive Bat to Small Bolt........12.33................10.68................12.26
Negative Bat to Small Bolt........0.....................1.5...................0
Positive Bat to Top Pin..........12.09.................11.26................11.99
Negative Bat to Top pin.........0.04..................0.72..................0.02
Positive Bat to Low Pin..........0......................0.....................0
Negative Bat to Low Pin.........12.4..................12.19................12.27

I now have the warning light on start up, though after revving it disappears, the voltmeter reads that I am generating more power as the revs go up, so hopefully this means I have got the right wiring! I am a little confused by the various readings from the top pin (W+)...

Does this look right?... hopefully I will be able to say in the next day or so whether its all working ok.

D+ is blue wire to indicator light.
W is green wire to buzzer of Doom module/Tacho (if you've got one)
B+ is big fat (usually red) wire to Battery+

Oh, and put in a new regulator/brush pack while you've got the alternator out.
1.9D (AEF) pop-top. Aaaaahhhhh........that's better.
