DK gearbox question

Post by Aidan »

OK it might seem odd me asking a question about a gearbox but I can't find the information out there so I am hoping someone here can help

DK gearbox can anyone tell me the teeth count on 4th gear please, part number 091 311 341 E

I don't do Aircooled so I haven't got one here I could open and check

at a guess its 50/61, but possibly it's stronger than that (ie fewer teeth)

cheers Oldie, I had already googled and found that info but it is in fact wrong, they state 52/61 but that is actually
091 311 145 G and 091 311 351 D and equates to a 0.85 gear ratio not the 0.82 as found in the DK, the old gearset was sold as a pair only and just had a single part number 091 311 341 E, and actually dates back to the late bay 091 box, but unfortunately Vagcat Etka and Etos don't give the teeth count for those gears

nope a DK is a 0.82 top hence it's reputation, it's the standard longest 4 speed box for T25 and is the same final gear ratio as the AAP 5 speed, which is why these are the boxes most people are after for their bigger engines, TDi conversions etc...the later ABB whilst having the same 32/7 final drive ratio only had a 0.85 top gear even though the engines had got more powerful by then, the van had put on weight and VW had become more conservative with the gearing
I'm not plugging the DK in any way mind, I'm just trying to find out the actual teeth count on the 4th gear

Just had a look in the 1979 091 transmission manual and VW quote 51:61=0.852 for the DK box and 51:62=0.823 for the DH box. I've never bothered to work it out but thats why I always thought they where 0.85:1

51/62 thanks for that herb

wrong way round I think though, DK is the .82, DH the .85 according to Etka and Etos

Don't think you will find water in a gear box......well, if you do think it is a good sign its furbarred!!

Just out of interest, Aidan, why don't you do air cooled gear boxes? Are they vastly different to water cooled?

Em,
not vastly different, but I would need to buy the special tool for setting them up, then find a source of decent parts, which are well obsolete now, good used ones aren't easy to come by and there are already a good number of Aircooled gearbox specialists out there who already have all that so can meet the needs of the Aircooled anyway, and ultimately I don't have much interest in them, and I don't want to get involved with bays;
it was a necessity/mother of invention thing that got me started on gearboxes anyway, there wasn't anyone I could trust to do mine and having already paid a lot of money to someone who was supposed to be a specialist and found out that his work was shoddy the hard way I was left with the buy a used one and take a chance, buy a supposed rebuilt one, or pay someone else I didn't know or trust to do it again, or buy the tools and have a go myself, that's how it started, built one for me out of three dead ones and it was ok, then another of the syncro boys and girls asked me/trusted me to do theirs and so it snowballed - the 2wd watercooled boxes are basically the same as the syncro and share a lot of common parts and use the same tools so doing them was a logical extension of the service

I've not since seen enough demand to invest in the tooling etc.. for the Aircooled, ditto the T4 - there are loads of gearbox places doing the 02family fwd gearboxes on exchange, I can't compete with them so no point trying, anyway at the mo I'm more than busy enough with the syncro and watercooled boxes and the later vans are so much more common nowadays, most of the aircooleds were scrapped in the 90's when they were seen as outdated/obsolete, only the campers and good ones still survive now really
