Camping in aires.
In a site near Monaco the Police came round told me to lock the doors and windows at night and also close my louvre windows. At Nimes near Marseilles a torch was shone into my my van at about 1.30 a.m. Although sometimes noisier always try and park near others or busy places. We also carry a noise alarm and considered a compressed air horn. Also a powerful torch that runs on the cigar lighter on a long lead. I also put a chain between my front doors at night.I would not consider wild parking unless in the company of other campers who agreed to stay there all night. sort of wagon train approach.

Many others would and do wild camp with out any issues - personally for the last 6 summers and just the one vehicle.

Re: Camping in aires.
Getunder is making a fair point especially in certain areas it can be dodgy to park up any old where. Italy, south of France and Spain can be risky if "wild" camping as a lone vehicle. We tend to use the motorway services or Aire de repos, anywhere there are people and lighting about. In the past I have carried "weapons" but now I am grown up I realise this is not the solution ...... could cause even worse problems
