Continued woes! - loss of power - possibly the clutch?

Doesn't sound too bad to me - if it stalls by the time you've got the pedal all the way up there should be enough 'bite' not to affect your top speed.

Try taking it for a trashing (well as far as you can in these vans!)

If the clutch is slipping it will show up when you are pulling away - the engine revs will build up quicker than the road speed, and then the revs will catch up the road speed as the clutch bites more. It should slip more with the more torque you put onto it (i.e. low gears with lots of power).

Sounds to me like there is something more engine related at the bottom of this.

Not sure where you are in London, but I'm down in Lewisham if you want a hand having a look for leaking hoses for air leaks.....

I've tried the thrashing method but it didnt really improve. it's now in the garage having a faulty cv joint fixed so i've asked them to have a look too. The clutch may be slipping a tad but i think the problems are a bit deeper than that sadly

I reckon the speed thing could still be ignition related.
I would ditch the new idle stablization unit and plug the connecting wires together. Then try that. If no improvement then it could well be that the timing is retarded at higher revs.
You said that the mechanic set the timing correctly but did he check the timing at high revs. It should be around 30 degrees btdc at 3000rpm. Your distributor mechanical advance might not be working as it should. Also, Is the vac advance working ok ?

So, the van is back from having it's faulty cv joint replaced. The mechanic check ever the clutch and that's all in good order. 2 of his guys tok it for a test drive and they both think it could be to do with the carbs. These were working A-OK about 6 months ago but i guess things can slip. Think i'm going to post in general chat to see if there's anyone in the london area who's a dab hand with twin solex carbs.

I was going to attempt it myself, honest ! Got it done the first time when i was working 6 day weeks and simply had no time! This was just a freebie making good a faulty part.

i have the same problem with my 2.0 litre Aircooled cu,

its really slow picking up speed and it seems to hesitate if i put my foot down (especially in second gear) its like its bogging down with to much fuel, i think that it is the mixture as my carbs havnt been balanced properly since i have got it back on the road, also it is hard to get it going over 50mph and losses power up hills, once i get over 50 with the help of a slight downhill stretch it will hold at 55 - 60mph quite nicely,

i believe i just need to have my carbs set up properly and i think there is an air leak wich is also not helping,
not sure how i check for air leaks though?,

Take the Dizzy cap off, suck on the Vac pipe, the gubings will move, it should hold when you block the end of the pipe. If the gubings moves back at this point replace all pipe endings.

Mine runs at 60mph on the flat 45mph with fingers and toes crossed up hill and drifts sides ways in the wind! Dont forget these sweeties are not made for speed.
