I agree about the campsite books. Basically of little use.

We just go where we please, only roughly planned, and look for signs for Municipal Campsites or Aires. Only once (in August) have we not got onto a site first go.

France is campervan heaven. We will be changing our Tesco coupons and booking the ferry from Rosslare to Roscoff this week.

I agree. There are thousands of good quality cam sites in France. We tend to do the same as you but what the books do is show you where sites are concentrated and where there aren't any (there are some big gaps in Northern France). They show when they are open. They also show where there are eating options and importantly if you have young kids, if there is a playground available. This can be very useful after a long days driving and you prefer not to cook and the kids need to let off steam. My tip is always have at least one up to date camping book on board just in case.

Yeh, I agree. My kids are all gone but they loved going camping in France right up until they were 16 -17 years old.

I never worry about getting a site although I've only been turned away once or maybe twice. If stuck I would just wild camp.

After saying that, I usually have several site books in the van but, in all honesty, hardly ever look at them.

I wouldn't ever be without a decent map even now that we have the satnav.

Happy camping.

Frank

here's how we have done it in the past and will be doing the same this year

Looked in our campsite book , found a site that is in the area we wish to visit , have a look in the aires book and on the sat nav for aires and campsites,
drove to the area , then gone to look at the aire , if its all good then we have stayed on the aire , if it looks a bit like a no no then we have have gone to the campsite.

We have only every thought 'oh no twice' once last year because it was a carpark next to the campsite and was ££££ and another cos of it was at the back of a supermarket and wasn't well lit and we didn't feel happy ..

This book is the dogs as far as we are concerned when it comes to campsites in France. Yes some of it is in French but has listed virtually every site plus aires. Takes a little while to get used to the format but we would plan a route and then see what sites were in the area and go from there.
