... and Aidan says it's not unknown. The welds holding the forks appear strange, one seems to have never really 'taken', whereas the 'blob' weld had, which being constantly stressed, eventually broke.

problem is, game over if you don't have a MIG nearby or a new shaft. I fitted a 2nd hand shaft from Aidan, but also welded the fork back onto the old one - which although its straight and takes a good whack from a hammer, would only ever treat as a last ditch spare in the toolbox.

NB. Grind the faces that mate with the back of the release bearing with a long flat stone, to regain parallelicity, most important to a good smooth action...
