How many 16" RHDs?

Post by TonyH »

Clearly this post is likely to lead to a curt response along the lines of "How many times are people going to ask this when it's quite obviously here in this FAQ?", BUT I've had a dig around and can't seem to find out.

I did look at the lovely (LHD) van that Lloydy is doing a great job of now, but missed out due to dithering. Wondering now whether it is worth waiting for a RHD, as I'm in no particular rush, or whether I should just plump for a LHD.

None. Ever. 2 were built from CKD kits in Australia for Trakka's Australian Rally entry in 1990 (?) There's pics out there, try vwpix.org

Just go for the best condition van, i wasn't looking for a 16" and bought more for the rarity of a 16" factory poptop. Fitting the westy poptop correctly would have cost more than i've spent on the van, and it still wouldn't be genuine.
Good luck

Not the "Surrey" one that I left the pub too early to hear about? I've seen pictures of a converted one on BY...the original work was... well... suspect.

From memory there were 5 or six built.. (or not.. kits.. either for Oz or Japan..)
there was a white one mike wanted to buy, it had been with vw for a long time and then was sold on somehow.. IIRC it went for about 10k euro at the time.. then we heard it may get converted to LHD as it was going to be a pain to insure in germany........ how true that was I dont know... seemed to dissapear...... prob gone into some collection I expect.
There were a couple floating around in Germany IIRC, but as said 2 went to Oz for "evaluation"...

I remember a friend telling me he went to buy a new caravelle syncro (14") when he lived in Oz, thought it was nice, but wasnt convinced of its offroad ability, so bought a disco instead.. oh.. he reckoned the price was similar to that of a range rover there at the time... prob why the 16" never made it, just too costly...

Oh, dont forget, my brain is old and addled and prob been fed a line or 2... Mike will remember more....

I spent quite some time talking to Mike at S25 about these 'two RHD 16" Dokas'. He sold one of them into Ireland but as yet we haven't found it. I thought I found it last October but it turned out to be a low mileage 89 14" TD Doka but it came from the right part of the country.

They do exist ....
