Glass too big!

Post by gypo »

Having received a sliding window for my bus a few weeks ago i attempted to fit it only to find that it is too big! I need to cut the opening a bit to make it fit.
Im thinking of cutting it with a jigsaw, would this be the way to do it? also how much bigger does the opening need to be to allow for the rubber?
Finally where is the best place to buy a rubber seal from, i bought one from Schofields and to be honest it was a bit sh*te it was only 20mm were all the others are 30mm.
Help please

have you got a factory window van if you have dont cut anything. there is a change in window size in about 85 i think so you need an age specific window for the van.

if its a panel van that has been cut i cant help as it can vary so much depending on what size window was fitted in the first place.

You have a late sliding door which has shorter handle and the window is from an early door. Early window is about 40mm longer than late. Can't see that you can cut the window aperture to make it fit.

Why do you think that it cant be cut? isnt it only the same as if you were cutting a new opening in say a panel van for eg?

If you cut it you will be removing the lip the rubber sits over and you will be left with an open double skin.

lets just confirm, factor windows sit in a recess in the panel , the outer skin touches the inner and the joing lip is where the rubber sits for the window , window and rubber flush with body work

after market / panel van conversion is basically a flat panel with a hole in it , window and rubber will sit proud of the body work

panel van conversions mean the outer bodywork is curved, the rubber takes this up or a curved window is fitted

factory windows have a flat lip and glass

Rubber around window, lay para cord into rubber, push window into opening. Next can be done on your own but it is easier if you have someone to push and hit the window as cord is pulled. You need to hit fairly hard but not too hard as to break the window.

Use genuine rubbers if you can. Seem to fit better and less chance of leak. You shouldn't need any lube.
