Aircooled Valve Issue

Post by richnewton »

I've known for a while that i had a vale issue on the old girl so I though i'd drop the engine and sort it ready for the year ahead.
it looks like it is just the one valve, there are a few pictures below but my question is.... can i just stick a new valve in and clean the rest up or does it require a bit more than that?

Er... I think that would take a lot of lapping in that.
I would use a good second hand head and lap the new valves into them.
Great pics rich. ..thanks

if it looks ok , try lapping it, that will give you an accurate descision.

check the guides for play.

personally , i would not put the engine back together without 4 new exhaust valves, piston rings and big ends.

that would give you a fresh new motor. , without splitting the case. 4 new valves are a minimium

Rich...Like others have said, I would be trying to regrind that seat with a replacement valve. You going to regrind the rest while your at it? I would. You got to also ask the question why its burnt out in the first place...mixture? Timing?
I may have a secondhand good valve if you need one

i would never put used exhaust valves in a vw engine,
always prone to dropping them(snapping)

get 4 new ones , lap all 8 valve in and be sorted

Hello,

I've been following the thread.

Yes, if you can, get a set of 4 exhaust valves, crankcase to cylinder paper gaskets and a complete set of valve stem oil seals, (available singly from JK.)

I would pull the cylinders and check/change the rings.

Number everything as you go, I use a fine hacksaw.

Grind in the valves , and grind the top of each cylinder into its valve chamber.

M2s (molybdenum sulphide) grease on the new valve stems would not go amiss.

Good luck and loads of compression.

Cordialement,

From this photograph it looks like the seat is shagged there where the valve has burnt away
