Filter options for CT engine?

Right, I have no filter box on my CT engine. So what filter options do I have, since I am finding it difficult to source a spare. 52mm opening on the top of the card, and 75mm oh headroom abovethe carb, so much much space.

Is there a pancake filter out there I can use as a temporary fix?

Where can I find an elbow joint and pipe to fit in there to make a filter arrangement? I'm struggling finding something that will fit.

The alternative is twin carbs but again, will they fit I wonder?

you can use anything that will fit but if you go for a free flowing / performance filter you should really check the fuelling out on a rolling road because there is a high chance you will loose power with one.

I know I can use anything that will fit, my question was does anyone know of any filters that will fit with a 52mm opening and 75mm headroom?

As for rolling roads, not a chance I'm having a rolling road session on an old 1600 air cooled lump that's been pushing a van around There really would be very little point, I'd just go with the coffee & cream method of looking at the spark plugs.

Hello,

Yes there are 'pancake' air filters that will fit. I've used empi before no problem.

A bit hissy on the inlet, and it may be worth winding out your CO screw 1/2 a turn.

Get one with a spigot to attach the crankcase breather pipe.

If your CT engine is set up as standard, then it will still be worth finding a complete air intake, as then you can use the pre-warm, and vacuum system to its best, ( it was specifically developed for the SOLEX pict 34-4 carburator. The same is found,though without the special flat rubber elbow on 1974 0n super beetles, (usa spec).

Have you blanked off the (VFR) right hand inlet manifold vacuum pipe (it's for operating the standard aircleaner)

I shall shop around when I am home then. It isn't standard, the carb is but the dizzy isn't. The previous owner hadn't blanked off the vac pipe, and when I rang him told me the engine wouldn't idle and didn't know why, the garage had told him it might have been that the timing belt had slipped or that the timing was out A quick glance and I spotted it almost immediately. As if by magic, once that was blocked off, it ran just fine!

I don't think so Dave, the only way to see if you engine is running rich/weak is emissions, plugs will tell you squat about an oily engine. You might back off that mixture to get the colour right only to find the dang thing melted in the engine bay

what kev says is very true, a lean aircoole = hot Aircooled= dead Aircooled

There are pancakes that fit or remote ducted filters . Available kit car parts suppliers like europaspares.com

I'm not disagreeing with you in anyway.. have you seen the lean best approach that many Aircooled sits recommend for setting up type 1 engines?
