LEAKING OIL COOLER...HELP!

Post by dcfb77 »

I'm in France due to leave tomorow and my oil cooler (from Brickwerks) seems to be leaking. (typical great timing!)

Photo: http://gallery.me.com/dcfb#100008/IMAG0102

As you can see on the photo it seems to be coming from the top bit that looks like its welded (correct me if i'm wrong please) in place to the cooler.

Its alloy so not easy weld for me to do without my tools! anyone got any ideas as to how to sort this out? Or any "get me home" ideas?

I'm thinking "quicksteel" but I dont think it will hold in place as cooler and mouns are alloy.

Any help/idea really appreciated!

Thanks, David

Are you sure the cooler is leaking? looks like it could be the seal on the pressure switch - or indeed the switch itself?...

Sadly its defo coming from the cooler. From the top bit in the photo. Where what looks like a big nut is kinda welded onto the oil cooler.

I'm trying to figure out whether that nut is undoable..... but don't want to try on case its nite and I break it clean off..

should be as there is a welded in threaded section - looks like yours could have a reducer/expander (the nut your talking about) to allow for a different pressure switch?

Take the filter off.
Take the sandwich plate off.
Refit the filter.
We sell loads of these kits, loads.
The only one we get back leak there, people tighten the unions without securing the cooler and they tear the fitting off the cooler.
There was a "bad batch" of coolers a while back where the thread was too short and the union bottomed out before they union tightened, looking at yours it isn't one of those so I can only presume that it's been tightened incorrectly.
Get back to the UK, send the cooler back and we'll send it back to mocal but i have a feeling I know what they will say.

Thanks Simon. I'll get it off and will send to you for diagnosis...

I was ubber careful when fitting it and made sure the welded nut was held in place carefully while I tightened it up...

Never had a problem with these oil coolers before either, I've fitted the same ones to my kit cars, etc without a hitch.

Seems to be happening on both sides although you can only see a very tiny bit of oil on the top of the right thread.
