Turbo Diesel thick smoke
I have a 1.6 turbo diesel syncro that had not run for several years when i bought it.
I have got it started but it pumps out thick white smoke thats smells of deisel. It will run if i keep the revs up but otherwise stalls.
I have run it several times for long periods but the smoke is just as bad.
It seems to me that it's overfueling but not sure.
Does anyone know what may be the problem.
Cheers

Quite possibly a timing problem, white smoke that smells of diesel could be that its injecting too late, thus not burning the fuel and chucking it out the exaust.
I had this problem a few years back, same symtoms (after I rebuilt the head), high revs, white smoke and diesel smell, I set the pully timing up and set the pump up which solved the problem.

The fact that it will only run at high revs shows that it is not running properly at the correct timing on 4 cyclinders. Does it actually go along the road properly?,
Normally, white smoke is 'bad news', but this seems to be a set up probem. Check timing very carefully, belt etc.

Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see.

Has it stood for any length of time without fuel in the system? If so it could be shot seals in the diesel pump...... something else for you to check, I guess.
