Was this "suddenly" during the recent cold? If so, it was most likely just steam that you normally don't see

If not, it could be that one or two of your glowplugs have packed in and you're seeing the grey-ish smoke of unburned diesel. That would disappear fairly quickly after the engine warms up and fires on all cylinders

Thanks for that - but it definately wasn't steam that time, a couple of blokes getting into their car behind me nearly keeled over from the smoke. Strange thing is that I started it this morning after a couple of weeks of laying idle and there was no smoke at all! I am wondering if the cause of the smoke was the injector cleaner I put in the previous tank of fuel? Maybe it didn't like the low temps? I will let you know how it goes over the next few days.
