Sorry Sid, but, respectfully of course, the Starter solenoid has nowt to do with the Alternator (which is permanently connected to the battery)
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

Of course, I was thinking of the starter motor, silly me. Is there any way the alternator can be checked to see if it has got dodgy windings?
