uprated 1.9 diesel starter,or is the 1.6 ok

Post by oldiguana »

hi guys...think maddam iguana's starter is ready to croak it...1y 1.9 diesel...takes 4 or 5 attempts in the mornin sometimes, but now its minus 6 its engaging, doin half a crank turn n dissengaging...think its time for a replacement....had it off 3 years ago and did a repair on it,the big wire from the solenoid to the main body was down to a few strands,so bodged it up...but is there a better alternative to gsf's £88+vat 1.6-1.7 diesel starter...orare we pretty much stuck.....as i would like to get somethin with a little more ooomph??

I've never had a problem using them on 1Y's or AAZ's - i dont think there is an alternative although sometimes starters look thicker than others - but no idea if this makes a difference.

After you have changed it, take off the earth strap from the chassis to the gear box and give all the connections a very good clean. This fault cost me a starter motor a year for ages - i couldnt for the life of me work out why i was ruining so many starters - and GSF were getting to the stage where they didnt want to offer the warranty

there are 2 oem starters , big bodied and a thinner one , just down to makes , dont think its early/late ect.

diesel staerter is specific to the t25 diesel!

if your starter is in good order as well as you battery leads and battery there should be no problem.

if its turning over slowly there will be a prob somewhere , it may be in the starter motoe itself or an earth/ powerlead fault or battery fault!

I had exactly that problem. Starter keeps kicking out at the slightest sign of the engine firing. It was the one way clutch in the pinion drive. Should have a smooth one way action, but it had a gritty feel. I bought a new drive, but while I was waiting for it to arrive I washed out the old drive in kerosene, then soaked it in oil, and it has been OK ever since.

I'm told original Bosch is NLA, but mine was part number SDV3783 from a firm called, amazingly enough "Starter Drives and Pinions" also had Q12269 on the box.

Taking the drive circlip off requires a special tool which you can make, but probably easier to take it to a specialist to repair.
1.9D (AEF) pop-top. Aaaaahhhhh........that's better.

does anyone know where a new brush pack can be found?..this would solve your possible problem with the braided part up to the solenoid(id be interested too,if anyone knows as mines about shot)while you have the back plate off give it a real good clean inside where the armature goes..i did this last summer and its never let me down (famous last words )
the word 'pissing' is safe

the main body of either starter type is quite a common artical , its only the aluminum head that fits the bellhousing thats odd.

A starter from a 1y (on any vento or equivalent) is the same as a syncro starter (same part no) just missing the spacer on the positive attachment

Have you had a quote from "AlternatorNStarters" they will price match and you get it delivered to your door, I got a 1.6 Diesel starter for £102 including vat and delivery, JK will want your old starter the above company don't as they only supply brand new starters. GSF had one for £86 but that was not including VAT and they required your old starter. if you require a quote call 07915 822042

Also think about modifying thr ignition switch to insert a solenoid since I have done t his mod I have never had a fail start! good luck
