One last question.

If the front inner has always been the smaller 14" version then what's the point of sourcing the more expensive and harder to find 16" axle and outer CV joint? Isn't anything as strong as its weaker point?

Dina also told me that they have sold quite a few of these heavy duty sets and, up until now, no one has complained.

russels probally right as he knows more about syncros than most. i doubt 1 side as been upgraded to the big cv and shaft. more likley that at some point someone has has difficulty obtaining parts and down sized 1 side to 14" shaft and outer cv.

this would suggest that the van was origonally a 16" with diff lock from the factory.

Hi Lee

Hold on, didn't Russel say that 'all front diffs use the same inner joints as fitted to a 14'. If this is the case then no modification to the front diff has taken place and Dina from Syncro Services is mis-informed or am I misunderstanding what Russel is saying.

Rob your van left the factory as a 16 with front locker.
I have heard of a van in South Africa having one standard 14 and one locker 16 fitted from factory. This is very unusual as SA never has
16 syncro's .

Hi Russel

Thanks for that. I've ordered two 14" front inner CV joints and one 14" front outer (with difflock) to replace the items originally sent to me. They should be with me well before my trip to Andorra in the new year. Dina is happy to give me a refund on the parts I didn't use.

If I can find a 16'' front axle I'll probably convert the van back to how it should be sometime in the distant future.

Cheers

If you read Hennings sit it is a bit unclear on the explanation of the 6 joint kit.
Rob i think wot has happened is they were supposed to send you the 6 joint kit for a 16 syncro that consists of 4 108 mm joints and 2 nine8 mm
joints" think thats the smaller size"
But they packed 6 108 joints by mistake.

I'll look at their site again but if that's the case then I wonder why Dina insists that all six joints are the same on a 16" Syncro??

My dual locker 16 has a 14 setup on the front offside corner. I believe non-availability of 16 parts a few years ago caused this to happen. It took me a year to source all the 16 parts. The front 16 drive shafts are difficult to find. They are shorter and thicker than the 14s.

By the way, does your 16 have the smaller inner front CV's?

Sourced my shaft via Mudlark at syncro25 from the lads breaking their crashed 16. Only place I found.
Gosh, can't remember what inner it is.

AFAIK, All front driveshafts have smaller inner 98mm cv J, same physical part as the rears but with unique boot
16" difflock shaft is different and has larger outer cv j

16" front diff lock diff is 2 pinion same as 14", the difference between the front diff codes is purely to do with the ratio of final drive and speedo drive that's fitted to suit the original tyre fitment

Hi Aiden

Thanks for that. So, if I've finally got this right, a 14's CV's are all the same size whereas the 16's have larger front outer, rear inner and rear outer CV's. The 16's front inners are exactly the same as the 14's.

One last thing, could someone please tell Syncro Services!!

Thanks for everyone's help.

Cheers

Rob
