Too dark, too cold and too late for pictures at the moment but I am sure those pipes enter the cab area behind the plastic cover behind the gearstick through a double grommet 251-265-061

Had the dash out last weekend, replacing my buggered heater matrix. As you can see on my 83 watercooled the pipes come in through in the centre below the air box (or above the spare if you're underneath), there is a grommet which has holse for the 2 pipes and heater valve control cable.

pipes go from the center of the dash / behind gearstick and vent cowl

UNLESS you have an early van - Aircooled era diesels have a completely different heater box. pipes drop through the floor next to the 'bulge' by the clutch pedal.

hopefully you have a late heater box , which means you need new heater cables and possibly the heater control plate and poss facia allowing for the switch.

bypass can be where ever , i have fitted one on my van underneath , front of the fuel tank , water valve for the hot cold on standard van goes behine radiator out side the van!

i have fitted my bypass for a different reason - so i can have my heater on cold and the water still circulates- good when we were in italy in the summer!
