I've just got a 1.6 TD and my Bently manual (or at I least can't find the section) nor Haynes Manual coveres the Turbo.
When I'm driving all is fine, When I accelarate I get this sssssh.....sssssh...sssssh etc untill the speed increases a bit or I decelarate. Power appears to be OK (although at 1.6 it's pretty gutless anyway). This happens in any gear so is engine speed related but it doesn't have a rev counter.
I think it could be something to do with the waste gate, but I'm a Marine Diesel Engineer and we dont have such fangled things at sea.
The turbo was replaced about 51,000 kms ago and a new recon engine (by VW) about 16,000 kms ago.
Would appreciate any feedback/advise
many thanks in advance

Re: 1.6TD Diesel Panting
Is there a boost gauge in the cab, if so its leaking.
Check connections to LDA on pump from inlet manifold.
If its loud from engine, check all pipes 7 manifolds for looseness /leakages, exhaust can come loose (look for soot)
need a better description actually.. how loud, how throttle dependent, is it really a Shhh. or a Whoosh, inlet or exhaust type noise.
My Shhhh used to come from cab when boost gauge pipe popped off the gauge! Thats the onkly one I know... normally Tds can make turbine whine, or whistle, sounds good but not alwasy a good sign (impeller damage)

Re: 1.6TD Diesel Panting
could be the blow off valve on the inlet manifold, there are threads somewhere on here or on BW
Re: 1.6TD Diesel Panting
Yes,BOV, could have actually blown off completely even

The truck has been up on ramps for the last month getting welded, drove home today and of course the problem is still there. Pretty sure it's the manifold blow off valve, how do I check it/adjust it and what does BW stand for?
Many Thanks

Hi Clive, em "BOV" what's that.
I've got a bunchk of manuals that cover almost everything BUT this engine it seems!
Thanks for the help

Re: 1.6TD Diesel Panting
Blow Off Valve
BW + BrickWerks (forum), actually the Brickyard
BOV can eb removed and hole plugged permanently or BOV fitting can be checked. THis is slightly adjustable I think, but set nominally to 12 psi on many VW TD diesels (which are set to boost to about 7.5 psi)

Re: 1.6TD Diesel Panting
Thanks for the posts and still trying to get on top of this. For sure it's the Blow off Valve and I'm tempted to just cap the exhaust from the valve but still concerned that if the waste gate doesn't do it's job I could end up with an overpressure in the manifold, although googling the subject the general opinion is the turbo would never put enough pressure in the manifold in a month of Sundays even with the waste gate "welded" shut!. I don't have a pressure gauge at the moment but will be fitting one ............any recommendations anyone on a good one ??
Trouble is VW put it there for a reason (we assume) and I don't want to vandalise a good design without being sure.
Anyone else got this problem or should I just take it out and ram a broom handle into the hole! Sorted.......

Yes, for long term life and reliability with joe public driving blindly and trusting completely
With someone driving who'd know if the boost pressure went berserk, through common sense or seat of the pants and no public liability concern over a few million vehicles, I wouldn't worry too much.
Also, with a boost gauge, you'd know... maybe even that BOV was cheaper than a boost gauge or boost warning light?
A wine cork seems to fit quite well.
