Re: procedure for setting up carbs to run correctly

Post by elmo makaroy »

right i now no that both carbs have to be balanced, and i know that i have to do this using a vacuum gauge,

my question is wot is the measurment of vacuum that both of my carbs should be matched at??

someone has told me that it doesnt matter as long as they are both the same, but i cannot get my head sround this,

i want my carbs to be set exactly how they should be, how they came out of the factory when the van was new,

any help would be very much apreciated

Its not a straight forward operation, setting carbs up, not only do you need a vacuun gauge but also a good gas analiser. You also need to understand what the analiser is telling you, HC's, CO and so on.....
And before you even start playing with carbs, you need to make sure you timing is right...5 ATDC...
Start doing alot of reading in wiki, samba and anywhere else that google sends you.

I've got to agree with the answers above. If you're a novice when it comes to tuning, then pay a garage to do it for you. If you want to do it yourself you'll need a decent strobe light to confirming your timing is right, a vacuum gauge, and a gas analyser (or at least a colourtune plug). That lot will set you back at least £100 and if you don't know what you're doing you could kill your engine. If you really want to have a go then the Haynes manual for the air-cooled vans has got a good description of how to set up the carbs and the timing.

to balance only you need to first check that they are indeed out of balance. vacumn guages on both carbs and you should find the guage evens out without either carb reading high. if you use the guage that doesn`t fit on to both carbs at the same time then you need to fit the guage to 1 at a time and record the readings. when you do this the idle speed must be the same both times or you will get a wrong reading.

this can also be done by a trained ear and a piece of tube, used like a stethoscope. each time you hold the pipe to the carb top it must be in the same position on both carb tops. you should hear a hiss which will be the air rushing in to the carbs, this should be equal.

if they are out then youll need to loosen the locking nuts on the linkage so that the throttle stop screws can be adjusted without effecting the other carb. once the lickage is loose you can adjust the throttle stops untill the carbs are balanced then lock up the linkages. they should now be ballanced for air.

mixture is a little more difficult without a gas meter. firstly remove the mixture screws completely and check they are not worn. then screw them in all the way "LIGHTLEY. DO NOT SCREW THEM IN TOO HARD AS THE ENDS OF THE SCREWS CAN SNAP OFF" once you are happy that the mixture screws are all the way in, screw them out 2 full and 1 1/2 turns out each. with the throttle stop screws screwed in far enough to achieve an acceptable idle speed the engine should run 1/2 tidy.

fine tunning the mixture is another story and if you want i can explain how to do it by ear but it would probally be best to take it and get the mixture set on a machine if you get this far.
