Just carrying out an oil change. There is a slight oil leak and I want to change the large washer on the oil pressure relief valve just in front of the sump plug.
On taking off the threaded screw, inside, is the spring and the plunger. Is there meant to be an o-ring at the top of the plunger? There is a groove suggesting there should be but mine hasn't.
cheers
Jake

I replaced mine earlier in the year together with the spring and although there is a tempting groove in there, no o ring.

Cheers for the input Kevkevtherev wrote:Ah well must be so then

MrBeard wrote:Hi Guys
I have recently picked up a T25 with a similar issue.
I have identified that oil slowly leaks out of the relief valve.
I took the screw (16&17) out and the spring (15), but the plunger/pistol (14) is stuck inside and I cannot release it.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I could get it out?
Cheers
Fire it up very briefly perhaps ?
Have an old towel at the ready
Actually that was meant to be light hearted, but might be worth considering...

Re: 1.9dg relief valve
This might sound ridiculous but I used the handle of a small paint brush. Poked it up inside and twirrled it gently, pulled it down and out it came. Don't worry about pushing the piston into the engine casing because it can't go. Lube with oil before re-inserting.
On re reading, this sounds quite an errotic job
Hope this helps

Hi All
Well what a day, I had a friend over to help with this plunger/valve. We tried WD40, We tried screwdrivers, we even borrowed a set of reverse pliers form a tractor mechanic to no avail.
Well we are down nearly to last resorts, Tomorrow the tractor mechanic is bringing a hydrolic pump designed for use in releasing pistols in engine (our best hope) or we will have to try Tapping in with a 10mm screw tap - think I'll let a mechanic at it at that point....
That thing is well stuck!

Re: 1.9dg relief valve
Hello MrBeard
I was browsing the VW Heritage T25 Catalogue the other day and they have a specific tool especially for this purpose. I assume it's on their web-site as well.
"Oil piston Puller. Removes the seized pressure relief valve piston. Not for Diesel. £26.52"
I don't like the idea of special single use tools, but I guess sometimes only the special tool will do, and this might be such a case. Anyway £26.52 sounds cheaper than getting a mechanic to look at it.
Cheers
Rich
