Re: Plasma gauges - bling bling

Post by silverbullet »

Just a thought - the SA always had a really iffy speedo. When I took it out it was the original KPH unit with a MPH face fitted (so now the mileage is all to whatsit on the MOT's for good measure since it was imported) Unfortunately the needle had not been re-fitted in the correct position so was well out of calibration, reading a good 15 MPH low at 70!!!
There are additional faint markings around the edge of the speedo face - I guess these are for needle fitting and calibration - so how do we find out the correct position to start with?

Neil, as ive said previously, i'll be getting them made to be as close a match to the originals as possible. So yeah, the kph scale will be there too.
As far as i know, the positions of the MPH/KPH markers on the dial faces are the same from speedo to speedo and like you say, its the internals that differ. (can someone correct me on this if its wrong please?)

Ian, as far as i understand it, the best way to take the needle off and replace it is to push the needle up a bit, then take accurate note of its resting position and use that as your benchmark for replacement. (it also seems to naturally line up with one of the markings you mention)

I'm still after a gauge set working or not to play with (i'm reluctant to mess up own working set) Anyone got one?

Al, I've a couple of incomplete clock sets in the shed. When the outside locks defrost at the weekend and I get a swath of early Crimbo parties out the way I'll have a rootle for you.

3 little marks on 4 speed box and 4 marks on a 5 speed.. are the max rpm change points for each gear.... if the speedo is correct for the gearbox/engine..

yes Simon it's the actual geared bit at the back that drives the odometer and the impeller for the speedo that changes and relates to the number on the face, ie 805 or 1600, if you stuck a 2wd in a syncro it'll either read twice or half I don't know which

I also like the idea of a UV, although as i remember it makes your teeth an eyes look scary.
those lamps make anything white light up dont they, so thats the needle as well as the callibration.

Set 1 has MPH/KPH speedo and analog clock

Set 2 has no speedo and analog clock

Both have front clear plastic windows and most parts of their flexy circuit board including to the clock light sockets, so could be useful for developing your installation instructions. If either are of use to you Al, let me know and I'll bung one in the post to you.

To clarify, the marker lines I was referring are not visible when the speedo is fitted in the dash unit, they are covered by the speedo bezel, so must be for calibration checks at manufacture.
I'm definitely not confusing them with the gearchange orange dots

Er no! I was offering one to Al to help with developing his idea which could bling our vans. Anyway, I've already described what they are - look three posts up.

Ok, Patrick has sent me the gauge pod to play with.
UV LED's are ordered and on their way.
Looking into paints, but will order them very soon.
