2.1DJ crankshaft end play

I've taken my 2.1DJ engine out to do some work on the heads and have discovered that there is a lot of end play on the crankshaft. I have not measured it but estimate that it is 1mm or so. It's a visible movement back and forth along with a bit of a clonk. I have fairly recently replaced a leaking crankshaft rear oil seal and don't recall there being nearly so much end float but looking back on it I guess the seal problem may well have been related to the crankshaft movement.

I presume now that there is likely to be a problem with main bearing outer races spinning in the crankcase but this is new territory for me and I would welcome any advice or guidance in case I am missing something obvious.

Yes, normally, but I suspect that the end play is too great to correct with shims. I will try to measure it more precisely.
