A few jobs

Post by pierce »

Hi I need to do a few jobs on my 88 1.6td and was hoping for a bit of advice up front.

Firstly, I need to replace the Exhaust Downpipe, but looking at where it attaches to the turbo, the nuts dont look in very good condition (to say the least). Any tips on removing them and if I need to replace the nuts and studs, what should they be replaced with?

Secondly, I am replacing the alternator and water pump belts; I can see how to adjust the alternator, but where do I adjust the tension of the water pump belt.

Finally, I have a leak from what I think looks like the oil pressure switch (its on a pipe leading to the oil filter at the top of the engine); I cant seem to find a replacement online, any idea?

Thanks in advance :)

Try heating up the bolts with a blow lamp.
Should undo then... you might need to replace the studs though

The oil pressure switches are readily available from Brickwerks for between £3-£4 . If its the one on top of the oil filter housing they are usually black or grey in colour and are located just behind the turbo oil feed pipe . Make sure you replace it with one of the same colour (because they have different ratings)

Water pump belt is adjusted via shims between the pulley halves, shim to loosen, remove shim/s to tighten.

Whoops, I have been looking at the photos and noticed all the pipes connect to the cooling system So I guess its must be a coolant temparature switch??

Why would it appear to be oily, there is no oil in the expansion tank?

My next guess is that its an auxillary water pump I didnt know that there are 2 water pumps. I wish the Haynes had diesels in, it would have saved me alot of embarassment.

Is it normal for coolant to look oily when leaking? it cant be leaking much either as the coolant level never goes down.

Yes that's the auxiliary water pump fitted to turbo diesels, definitely not an oil pressure switch .Here's what you need from Brickwerks if it's leaking.
