1989 California, should leisure battery charge via hook up?
Hi folks, as the title says. The leisure battery in our 1989 California 1.6td charges fine from the alternator but doesn't charge when connected to an electrical hook up. Should it... or do we stick with carrying a small battery charger around with us to top up on site? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks Simon, looks like something's not working somewhere then. The plug socket is working fine so the hook up would appear to be ok, does anyone have any ideas where/what to check next or had a similar problem?simoncummins wrote:Yes it should.

Cheers Tom, Nothing's buzzing and I can't see a black box, only a clear box with 'Truma' written on it which I'm pressuming powers the propane heater? I'll have a closer snoop around tomorrow as we're in Spain at the moment and the better half has pulled the bed out.ninja.turtle007 wrote:Test the Buzzing Black Box under the rear seat.

There should be a black box under rear seat with louves in it on the opposite side to the units. It is like a battery charger fed by a mains feed from where the socket is it should hummmmmm and get warm this should then feed both batterys with 12v.

Couldn't you just wire in your portable battery charger?
Sounds like someone has binned yours off - or moved it somewhere else

BBB charger should be fitted to the left side (as you lift the R&R seat up) but sounds like it has been removed.
You should fit a modern multi stage replacement that has the ability to go to float charge when the battery is fully charged.
Something like this:

Note* needs to be minimum of 6A (8A plus recommended) withe the ability to be left connected (float charge functionality so it doesn't boil batteries dry)

Thanks for the replies folks, we've got as far as Marrakech and have parked for up to five days at a time with no power issues so I reckon we'll be fine for this trip. Will look into the tanya link when we get back. Thanks again.

Head West to Essaouira for a really chilled out time by the the sea and there's a few T3 owners there too - I'll try and dig out a few contacts for you
PM me if you want any local contacts on the way
