oily gunky gearbox and wheres the filler?

Post by lloydy »

Bit off a mess down one side of the box
Image
Am i missing something from where the gear linkage goes in to the box? some sort of cover to hold in grease?
I can see where a bellow has come apart further down the linkage{bottom right of pic]. Just wondering where the gunk has come from?
It's quite strange as its not oily where it looks wet, kinda glazed. I also want to remove the diff lock actuator, do i remove the two nuts either side of the actuator shaft? whereabouts is the pin on the shaft?
The last question is where is the oil filler on the box and do i need to remove anything to get to it?
Sorry for the dumbass questions

Have this one on me - look behind and above the "onion" at the righthand edge of your pic. It's a fiddle to refit esp. when the new oil is dribbling out. Don't Panic!
You'll need about 1000mm of garden hose and a funnel to refill it. Route hose fron the engine hatch, down the side of the difflock actuator and into the box.
3.5 litres of 80W90 GL-4 and pour slowly...
PS check the van is nice and level before starting the job!

The gear selector rod carries the vertical alloy "cup" that receives the short selector arm that comes out of the gearbox. The rod slides in a bracket that's bolted to the gearbox to the right of your pic, the middle bit of which contains a plastic spherical bush fondly called an onion (it looks more like a pumpkin tbh)
The filler hides just forward and above this bracket. It's out of shot on your pic.

Guess so. Might even tax it Looks like the rear diff's on the way out judging by the shrapnel on the drain plug magnet
Well it can't get any worse, can it? Then I'll pull the box and get it to Aidan for a makeover asap.
Off home now to look at the siezed driver's door lock, the heating's gone off here anyway.
