passenger door switch / interior light

Post by 16vmini »

got a LHD westy , drivers door opens and light comes on , passenger door does not work/ light on .

removed switch from door frame , and found no wire attached so this is the proble,
looked behind glove box but cant see any trace of a wire, removed drivers side and noted colour of wire , also noted it had two wires coming off it ...

is one supose to go to the passenger door ? anyone know where it runs ?

Hi Matt,

the wire that goes to the door switch earths the light (I'm sure you knew that but just to be sure ), and the wire that runs from the fuse box to the light goes on to the back of the van IIRC - for the interior light switched on by the sliding door. If you don't have the wiring but you do have the light, the easiest thing to do is to take a spur off the interior light wire down by the fuse box (fuse number 8 on early vans, and number 2 on later ones) and run it up the door pillar to the passenger light, and then back down to the switch at the door. Titus A Duxass had a post about threading wire in these places recently and he would no doubt answer this better than me - I use steel-wound guitar strings, or electricians nylon cord to do mine, but other people suggested piano wire which is probably better if you have any!

cheers for the response.. let me just state what seem to have ,

i have only one internal light , which is above the drivers door (LHD) , i dont seem to have any others.
i do have two switches in the front door frames.

I dont have a switch for the sliding door , allthough i have seen a blanked off hole for one to go into.

I have seen some pictures if a internal light built into the dash above the glove box , not sure if this is std T25 stuff or not ?

think i will just have to run another wire accross for now , untill i locate another light unit for the passenger side.

ok - sorry if I misunderstood - I thought you had a disconnected light on the passenger side.... I'll have a look in Haynes later and see where it thinks the wires from the driver's door switch go.. one to the light obviously, but the other one must go somewhere where it's waiting to be connected to something!

Just checked in my Haynes - which is for the later models, but it says the other wire (brown and white?) from your driver's door should indeed tie to the passenger door. I don't know how reliable this is though - I put in a separate passenger side light and switch on mine as they weren't there to begin with.....
