engine wont turn over

Post by akikolajoie »

I bought a new battery today with more cold cranking amps because I was having trouble starting the van when cold. I put the new battery in and it cranked first try with the new battery. I turned it off and cranked it several times just to make sure it was ok. Well about the 3rd or 4rth time it just wouldnt turn over at all and I heard a hum coming from the engine area. Is this a bad solenoid or a starter gone, or worse? Van is an 81 T25 with a 2000cc engine. Ive about had it with the starting problems on my van. Any help would be appreciated.

Try giving the starter motor a whack.

if you are down there anyway you may as well replace the earth strap between the chassis and gear box. its also an idea to clean the faces where the starter meets the bell housing and all the contacts......youve got to give yourself the best chance and its not always a duff battery

I actually cleaned all the connection last wekend. Removed the earth srta, cleaned it all up, and replaced it. Cleaned all the connections in the entire system. Think I may have to take the starter apart and clean it up a little. Any known issues with this or just a couple of bolts holding it on like other vehicles?

My van is a 2ltr air-cooled CU engine. I got the starter at a local place.
